Welcome to www.safecommunitiesqld.org

Our aim is to promote a culture of safety and hence reduce injuries in Queensland, with the 'knock on' effect both nationally and internationally. To do this, we need to be advocating for effective change, sharing information as widely as possible and developing partnerships which positively support a safer environment. A community has multiple components, so every one of us, both professionally and personally has a role to play. Each community is different, has some fundamental similarities and some significant unique qualities. That is why there is a guide, the six WHO indicators, which provide a broad structure under which any community can develop an effective approach to their risk management.

In Queensland, there are many organisations and individuals who currently already contribute their vast experience with injury prevention and safety to the Queensland communities, and many still who can harness their skills toward this goal.

Our role in the Queensland Safe Communities Support Centre (QSCSC), based at the Mater Hospital, South Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, is to make connections between these organisations and individuals and faciliatate the support for both new and emerging Safe Communities. We want to keep you informed about the successes and failures of established Safe Communities, to share with you the resources that other communities have access to, the potential partners in your community and to showcase their innovative safety programs.

We advocate a Safe Communities Program in
Queensland guided by the WHO Indicators for Safe Communities because an evidence based approach is the best way to ensure sustainable change. The WHO Safe Communities Program is specifically designed to produce measurable outcomes that are important for individual communities.  Queensland communities have embraced the WHO model and corporate agencies and government departments are now joining together to develop a multi-agency, collobarative position.
